Can OPKs be misleading?

My period is 27 days long so I calculated my ovulation day accordingly to get pregnant, but I used OPKs to be sure. I got positive on the day before I was supposed to ovulate and then the day of ovulation it gave me negative!! I retested and it gave me negative, how could that be? I'm afraid I ovulated already and missed my chance.
