Help! I need good ideas to detract spiders and keep them out of my house...?

This fall I've killed literally hundreds of the same kind of spider (which I’ve never really noticed until it started cooling down this year, they’re medium sized (a bit larger than a quarter, including legs, and they almost never move – until they realize they’re getting attacked). But they keep congregating near our home’s entry door in our attached garage. Is there anything I can put on the (drywall) walls and ceiling of the area to detract them from our home’s entryway? I feel a bit bad killing them, but more keep showing up and hanging around. I’m sure that eventually they’ll be vying to get into the house for the winter – help! (I’d love a nice home-remedy or DIY trick, we have a toddler (and we’re completely broke) so I’m not eager to use industrial repellents and can’t afford a pest-service.)
